Every bullet point on your resume should start with a strong action verb. The verb signals competence and scope. Weak verbs ("was responsible for," "helped with") make experience sound passive. Strong specific verbs make the same experience read as leadership and impact.

ATS systems also index action verbs as signals of seniority. "Directed" signals leadership. "Assisted" signals a supporting role. Choose accordingly.

How to use action verbs effectively

Pair each verb with a specific, measurable outcome:

  • Weak: "Managed customer complaints."
  • Strong: "Resolved 95% of tier-1 customer complaints within 4 hours, achieving a 4.8/5 CSAT score across 3,000 monthly interactions."

Formula: [Action verb] + [what you did] + [measurable result]

One verb per bullet, never repeated

If you use "Led" in your first bullet, never use it again on the resume. Every bullet should begin with a completely unique verb. Highlight the first word of every bullet — if any word appears more than once, replace it with a synonym from the lists above.
